Serving my neighbor

Serving my neighbor

As I  was  typing this post yesterday, sitting in my front porch, I could  hear my son playing in dirt, picking up sticks and rocks and finding roly polies. Dirt was still very wet after last night downpour.I can hear the chirping of the birds and smell of the dirt after it rains, the green foliage freshly bathed and perfumed.

I remember a parable Jesus told in Luke 10:29-37.I have caught myself asking the same question, a man is asking Jesus in a parable,”And Who is my neighbor?”.I can only say that the definition of being neighbor  is not limited to the family or a person who lives in a house next door to me.It extends beyond that.

God has uniquely gifted us with the senses to enjoy His blessings. These gifts enrich our lives and can be used to enrich the lives of those around us.

April is busy month for us and same goes for our friends too.Fast approaching end of the school year and extra curricular activities makes it hard.So this month we didn’t get to playdate together with purpose.Hold on, it does not mean that we  took vacation from being purposeful.

God doesn’t take vacation away from us,so neither should we from Him.
So in this busy month,I challenged ourselves to find a way to be purposeful .Rest assured we will make up for lost playdate fun later :-)

Lets begin with our closest neighbor. The one who is living with you :-).April is a month of birthday and anniversary in our home,so that makes this month easily ‘special’  for us.How do you make your kids serve in the midst of cupcakes and cookies ?Well mine go to shopping with me, pick up the goodies and put it together to serve their friends. They made  a card and wrote a ‘Thank You’ note  to the one, they received a gift from.

On the birthday streak, not only we celebrate our daughter’s birthday this month. We also celebrate birthday of special little girl in India who we sponsor. How?Well we wish we can send the cupcakes to her(Compassion doesn’t agree with me for right reasons only)but we can send some pictures and letters to the very least right ?And we did.

To encourage letter writing,we made these mailboxes. Why?Because letter writing becomes more fun if one receive their mails via spaceship and trains.Don’t you think? After all,mom is not the only one who gets to write to that special little girl.So for every mail our kids get in their mailbox they have to write one to that special girl.(We write a note to our kids and put it in the mailbox)Even though we will receive limited letters in a year, doesn’t mean,we can’t write or draw frequently.Does it?

I remember how much we appreciated, when people brought meal to us after i had our daughter.I didn’t even know lot of folks who brought us meal before that.I was amazed that they cared to cook and bring the meal to the family they hardly knew and have barely met.I was not accustomed to it and was taken by surprise when people called to say,’Hey,i am so and so and i am bringing meal to you tonight.”.Really?Who are these people?I wondered it must be a ‘church’ thing.I didn’t grasp back then that they ‘choose’ to serve a family out of Love for Christ,as they are called to do.

I didn’t know back then, this is the cause which will become so dear to me over the years. We had the opportunity to serve one such family, who were struggling with some medical challenges.I barely knew them and now have become friends after all this.
We ought to find our identity in Christ and desire fellowship with one another in a manner which shines light on Him.
